Puppy food?

  • Jul. 9th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
Hi guys! I'm currently in the process of adopting a new puppy, a rottweiler-mix (the litter looks like purebred rotties, but the shelter doesn't know if they actually are). I'm very excited. :) I have one, possibly stupid, question. We feed Pebbles and Carl Canidae life stages dog food. My question... is this actually intended for all ages of dog? Would it be dentrimental to a large-breed puppy not to eat food specifically for puppies? I keep reading about bone problems and growing too fast... I'd ask my vet, but like many he seems to think Science Diet is the be-all and end-all of dog food. Anyway, I know there are some big dog owners here, so I'd appreciate your input!

Flea Update

  • Jul. 9th, 2008 at 10:26 AM

First off I want to thank everyone who responded to my plea for help with my flea situation. You all had so many great suggestions!

I treated my whole house with Borax – I put it down and then broomed it into the carpet and left it on for about an hour and a half and then vacuumed it up really well. I washed all the bedding and rugs in hot water and then dried them for good measure. Since I had already dosed the pets up with Frontline I took Apple Cider Vinegar and diluted it with some water and sprayed them down with it – I rubbed it in really well and then dried their fur with a towel. Mitsy sneezed a lot and Zero (the cat) was very unhappy, BUT it has made a difference. When I rolled the dog over to look at her belly – the 20 fleas I previously spotted there were replaced with only one. I plan on putting them on Sentinal as well.

I waged war and I think I “might” be winning!

Woot!

Potty Training

  • Jul. 9th, 2008 at 10:26 PM
As a lot of you probably remember me... maybe... I have a beagle... she's now going on 12 weeks old and we've been potty training her. We have been 'crate' training her, as well as taking her out as much as every 20 minutes... which is shocking sometimes... but sometimes she just won't go... period. Or if she goes, it's like a tiny little bit... then she'll come inside and do it. I know this happens from time to time but after 4 weeks of it it's getting a bit much.

Now finally we got a crate... and we put her in the crate for 5-10 minutes after she eats and then take her straight out - depending sometimes we take her straight out and go on a walk... we give her plenty of praise for going outside and everything but now she's gotten into the habit of peeing in her kennel. We've found every SINGLE day were washing out her kennel and disinfecting it and scrubbing it as best we can to get the smell out so she doesn't associate going in her kennel... now the question is, this is getting a bit much... aren't dog supposed to not pee and poo in their kennel? She's not in there for long periods, and when she is were gone out of the house or sleeping... and she mostly goes during the day...

Also to people that want to know, we only have food and water for her at designated times so we know when she's going to pee and poo... but seriously, it's getting a bit much... any advice I'm going crazy!...

You.

The definition of You is; AMAZING<3
You are my everything. When you are happy, I'm happy. When you are sad; I'm sad. You know how to even get me angry at the people you are angry at. When I'm in a bad mood, you know how to make me smile. You say the right things that put me in a great mood. You bring the best out of me. You make me want to take chances and love. You never bring me down if I do something bad. You always have the right advise for me. We've been through so much. Ups and the downs. But we always end up forgiving each other. Seems like we just can't get enough of each other. I get jealous of the other girls. Ohh so jealous. I can talk to you about everything, and I trust you without any worries. I'm happy for you, whatever you do. I worry about you. I think about you all the time wondering how you are doing, or what you are thinking about. I wonder if you ever think of me. Even online, we practically read each others minds. If we are talking on IM, I open up your window to say something to you, and I see you're already starting to type something. You're just amazing, and I wouldn't want to change you...at all <3

wireless fencing

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 7:33 PM
I have 3 cats and 2 dogs (plus 2 foster dogs).

I really, really want a wireless radio fence that will work for all of them. Petsafe makes a wireless dog fence and a wired cat fence but I want a combo.

I move a lot so a wired fence isn't desirable plus one unit would be so nice.

Anyone know of anything?

Thanks.

Good News!

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 5:48 PM
Vet agreed with me and doesn't think we should do blood work until she has another seizure.  She said something like 95% of dogs who have them never have them again.  She thinks it was probably just a mixture of her being sick and possibly having low blood sugar.

The lump on her side is not a lymph node.  She doesn't know what it is in fact.  I asked her to aspirate it and it was just clear liquid.  She said under the microscope it's just RBCs and WBCs, nothing abnormal.  She said it's not a fatty tumor and there is nothing cancerous but thinks it might be a foreign body of some sort.  She scanned it thinking maybe it was a floating microchip but no go.  She just told me to keep an eye on it and if it grew or changed anymore (it started as a lump, then turned into a bean shaped bump, now it feels like it's split in half) to bring her in and they'd just remove it.  She said it wasn't anything to worry about though.

*sigh of relief*
So the news was overall good, which is great to hear!

Separation anxiety?

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 5:46 PM
We've had Dahlia for almost two months now and she's been a dream. We've left her alone any number of times and she's always been great. No messes. Nothing out of place. Just a dog happy to see we're home. This morning we left her alone for a few hours. My partner came home to find part of the blinds chewed apart (pieces on the floor) and the screen torn out in the middle.

I'm not sure what happened or what would have caused this sudden destructiveness. This is a dog who doesn't even chew on her own toys and spends a lot of her time, when not out on walks, lounging around.

It sounds like some sort of separation anxiety and that has me really worried. I'm not sure what to do. Any thoughts or suggestions?

a dog themed party?

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
my boyfriend is having a bday BBQ/margarita party and since we have a big fenced in yard, we told all our friends to bring their doggies too. so far, for the dogs, we have a kiddie pool, 2 sand boxes, a cake from three-dog-bakery.....but we wanted to know if you guys had any cool ideas for dog games, raffles, and other fun stuff? what are good toys to put in the sandbox and pool? should we hide treats in the sandbox or is that a no-no? this is new to us....as you can tell. we also wanted to give away party favors and cheap doggy bags filled with treats. what are some inexpensive things to put in them that are yummy and healthy?

as per my previous post, im not sure Foxy deserves a dog party, but hopefully we will have his food issues sqaured away by the time we do this. haha.

and does anyone here live in the boca raton/delray area of florida? you could come!!!!

Jack really wanted someone to play with him, or at least give him some attention!

HELLLLLP!

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 8:13 AM
Floyd(see icon) has some issue with going to the bathroom. I don't know if it's the leash, or what, but it's like he holds it and holds it until he can't anymore. He usually doesn't pee in the house but he holds his poop until it just comes out and then he pees a little. It's getting very frustrating. The vet said there is nothing physically wrong with him and she has no clue why he would be doing this.

In the past two weeks he has:

Pooped on our bed, while we were PLAYING with him!
Got up from sleeping on the couch and pooped.
Pooped on my husband while he was playing with him.
Got out of the bathtub and pooped all over the house as he was running out.

And various more instances like that.

What gives, people? I can't take this! We take him out constantly, I waddle my pregnant self around the yard with him in the sweltering heat until I am pouring sweat and he will NOT GO! We are now on day two of no pee/poop from him at all and I am dreading his next accident.
